7v7 Man Cover 1 Blitz
One rusher, five man defenders and one deep safety. This pressure version assumes an ineligible center and five eligible non-QB receivers. It does not cover a sixth eligible receiver.
The solid line marks the line of scrimmage. Arrows show the initial coverage movement or rush lane; shaded areas show zone responsibility. Man defenders maintain cushion, then match the receiver’s release. The dashed rush line is a starting-depth requirement for rushers, not a limit on safety depth. Confirm your league’s rush and receiver-eligibility rules.
Defender breakdown
Use when: Use only with an ineligible center or another rule that leaves five eligible receivers. If the center can release, use the no-rush Cover 1 or a zone call; do not leave the center for the deep safety. Run 7v7 Man Cover 1 Blitz — defenders read pre-snap formation and motion, then play their assignment below. Primary key: alignment first, eyes to keys at the snap.
Personnel: 7 defenders — 1 rushing, 5 in man, 1 in zones, 0 spying.
Before the snap: identify every eligible receiver, confirm strength and matchups after motion, and communicate who has deep help.
Flag rules: the rush line sets the rusher’s minimum starting depth; safeties can align deeper. Use your league’s rush, center-eligibility and ball-exchange rules. Play coverage without grabbing or contacting receivers.
Assignments:
- : align 7 yards off the LOS, middle; rush off the edge — start at the league’s legal rush depth, take the shown angle to the QB’s near hip, shorten your steps and pull the flag under control.
- : align 5 yards off the LOS, left; man on receiver X — maintain inside leverage and cushion, mirror the release; the free safety helps deep but does not replace your matchup.
- : align 5 yards off the LOS, left; man on receiver H — maintain inside leverage and cushion, mirror the release; the free safety helps deep but does not replace your matchup.
- : align 6 yards off the LOS, right; man on receiver B — maintain inside leverage and cushion, mirror the release; the free safety helps deep but does not replace your matchup.
- : align 5 yards off the LOS, right; man on receiver S — maintain inside leverage and cushion, mirror the release; the free safety helps deep but does not replace your matchup.
- : align 5 yards off the LOS, right; man on receiver Z — maintain inside leverage and cushion, mirror the release; the free safety helps deep but does not replace your matchup.
- : align 13 yards off the LOS, middle; drops into Deep middle (FS) (17-yard landmark) — protect the deep middle — stay deeper than the deepest receiver and overlap the throw; do not chase shallow crossers.
What it gives up:
- An eligible center makes this call incomplete unless assignments are changed.
- Quick throws can beat the rush from its legal starting depth.
- Bunch, motion and crossing routes still challenge man coverage; the free safety must stay deep.
Teach it: walk the alignment first, then rehearse a vertical, a short outside throw and a crossing route on each side. Freeze after the first movement to check depth and leverage. Add a run or ball-exchange read, then finish under control.
When to call it
