7v7 Man Cover 0
Six man defenders and a QB spy, with no deep safety and no designated rusher. The spy reads the QB and ball exchange under the league’s crossing rules. Cover 0 describes the lack of deep help, not an automatic blitz.
The solid line marks the line of scrimmage. Arrows show the initial coverage movement or rush lane; shaded areas show zone responsibility. Man defenders maintain cushion, then match the receiver’s release. The dashed rush line is a starting-depth requirement for rushers, not a limit on safety depth. Confirm your league’s rush and receiver-eligibility rules.
Defender breakdown
Use when: A selective short-field call when every eligible receiver has a matchup and you value a spy. If pressure is needed, assign it explicitly and check that the rusher starts at the legal depth. Run 7v7 Man Cover 0 — defenders read pre-snap formation and motion, then play their assignment below. Primary key: alignment first, eyes to keys at the snap.
Personnel: 7 defenders — 0 rushing, 6 in man, 0 in zones, 1 spying.
Before the snap: identify every eligible receiver, confirm strength and matchups after motion, and communicate who has deep help.
Flag rules: the rush line sets the rusher’s minimum starting depth; safeties can align deeper. Use your league’s rush, center-eligibility and ball-exchange rules. Play coverage without grabbing or contacting receivers.
Assignments:
- : align 5 yards off the LOS, left; man on receiver X — no deep help — keep cushion and inside leverage, mirror the release and stay with the receiver through the break.
- : align 5 yards off the LOS, left; man on receiver H — no deep help — keep cushion and inside leverage, mirror the release and stay with the receiver through the break.
- : align 4 yards off the LOS, middle; man on receiver B — no deep help — keep cushion and inside leverage, mirror the release and stay with the receiver through the break.
- : align 5 yards off the LOS, right; man on receiver S — no deep help — keep cushion and inside leverage, mirror the release and stay with the receiver through the break.
- : align 5 yards off the LOS, right; man on receiver Z — no deep help — keep cushion and inside leverage, mirror the release and stay with the receiver through the break.
- : align 6 yards off the LOS, right; man on receiver C — no deep help — keep cushion and inside leverage, mirror the release and stay with the receiver through the break.
- : align 6 yards off the LOS, left; spy Q — mirror lateral movement, stay square and close only when the ball and league crossing rules allow.
What it gives up:
- No deep help makes a lost vertical matchup costly.
- Bunch and motion can create unclaimed receivers if matchups are not communicated.
- Without a rusher the QB may have time to wait for separation.
Teach it: walk the alignment first, then rehearse a vertical, a short outside throw and a crossing route on each side. Freeze after the first movement to check depth and leverage. Add a run or ball-exchange read, then finish under control.
